There are two clean ways to turn a YouTube video into Shorts. Use YouTube's built-in Edit into a Short flow when the source is your own public upload and one continuous selection of up to 60 seconds works. Use the original source file or an authorised external-editor import when you need a longer edit, several source moments, exact captions, composed vertical framing, or reusable exports.

Do not start by downloading a stranger's public video. Public viewing is not permission to copy, edit, or republish it. This guide is for videos you own or are authorised to use.

Choose your route before you cut#

The routes solve different jobs:

NeedYouTube Edit into a ShortOriginal file or authorised editor
SourceYour own eligible public uploadMedia you own or have permission to edit
SelectionOne continuous range, up to 60 secondsTool-dependent; can combine or reshape ranges
Link to originalAdded automaticallyAdd a Related Video after upload when eligible
Detailed caption correctionLimited creation workflowUsually easier in a full editor
Complex vertical compositionBasic layout and crop controlsMore control, depending on the editor
Reusable clean masterNot the main purposeYes, when the editor exports one

Choose the built-in route for speed and attribution to the source. Choose an external workflow for editorial control. Neither route removes the need to check context, rights, framing, captions, and the final upload.

Route A: use Edit into a Short on your own upload#

As checked on 2026-07-31, YouTube's official instructions use this mobile workflow:

  1. Open the watch page for a public long-form video you uploaded.
  2. Tap Remix, then Edit into a Short.
  3. Select up to 60 seconds from the video.
  4. Tap Next and use the available text, filter, layout, or other creation controls.
  5. Add the Short's details and upload it.

The Short links back to the original video. That makes this route useful when the clip is a complete answer but the full episode provides deeper context.

If you select less than 60 seconds, YouTube says you can record additional material in the Shorts camera up to the same 60-second total. That can help you add a new introduction or reaction, but it becomes new editorial material. Check it for accuracy rather than treating it as part of the original quote.

If the option is missing#

Check the eligibility conditions before looking for a workaround. The official help page says Edit into a Short is limited to long-form public videos you uploaded. Private and unlisted videos, and videos with third-party copyright claims, cannot use the feature. The source also needs to be opted into Shorts sampling.

In YouTube Studio, open the video's details, expand Show more, find Shorts remixing, and allow sampling if that choice is appropriate for the video. If the source must remain private or has a claim you need to resolve, do not bypass the restriction by using an unauthorised downloader. Return to the original source file and your rights records.

Route B: edit from the original or an authorised import#

Use a separate editor when the Short needs more than a continuous excerpt. Common reasons include:

  • the answer and its setup occur in different parts of the video;
  • the idea needs more than 60 seconds but still fits YouTube's current Short classification;
  • a landscape screen demonstration needs a composed layout;
  • captions contain names, technical terms, or figures that need careful correction;
  • you want several clips from one source;
  • you need a clean master for your own archive or other authorised destinations.

The best source is the original recording or project export. It avoids recompression and gives you a clearer chain of permission than a copy pulled from a watch page. If the file is stored elsewhere, use an official connector or a controlled owner-media transfer.

Vidrial can import eligible public or unlisted YouTube media through its Available connector only after explicit rights attestation and plan checks. That does not make arbitrary public videos fair game. The authorisation decision belongs to the user and the rights holder, not the URL.

For a broader AI-assisted procedure, see how to turn long videos into Shorts with AI.

Select a moment that works without the watch page#

A viewer in the Shorts feed may meet the speaker and topic for the first time. The chosen range needs its own subject, claim, and payoff.

Use a three-line selection card:

  • Question: What exact question does this moment answer?
  • Necessary setup: Which fact must a new viewer know before the answer?
  • Payoff: What changes or becomes clear by the end?

Reject a moment when the necessary setup is most of the original video. A strong sentence such as "that changed everything" is not a useful opening when the viewer cannot tell what "that" means.

AI moment discovery or transcript search can produce candidates. It cannot settle whether the cut fairly represents the speaker. Read the transcript before and after the proposed range, then play the lead-in and exit. The highlight-selection guide explains why relevance, saliency, and standalone clarity are separate judgments.

Repair the boundaries before adding style#

Most extracted moments need a few seconds of adjustment. Start too late and the subject disappears. End too soon and the viewer hears a claim without its evidence or qualification.

Set the opening at the earliest point that creates clarity without importing the long video's housekeeping. That might be the host's question, the speaker's first complete clause, or a short written setup. Set the end after the result, demonstration, or final qualification and before the next topic begins.

Play the selection once without its title or description. If a pronoun has no clear reference, a number lacks a unit, or the viewer needs an earlier slide, repair it or choose another range.

Do not hide context loss behind a dramatic hook. A clean opening that changes the speaker's meaning is a failed edit.

Reframe for the information, not just the face#

A vertical crop should preserve what proves the point. For a solo talking head, that may be the speaker. For a tutorial, it may be the cursor and interface. For an interview, it may be the active speaker plus a reaction. For a physical demonstration, the hands and object may matter more than either face.

Watch the entire clip after reframing. Check whether:

  • the subject moves outside the crop;
  • a shared object disappears;
  • source graphics or subtitles collide with new captions;
  • automated movement jumps between speakers;
  • text becomes too small to read on a phone.

If one 9:16 crop cannot preserve the needed evidence, use a designed layout or reject the passage. Do not assume every editor has reliable subject tracking or multi-speaker layouts. In Vidrial those features are Coming soon, so they require a manual or separately verified workflow today.

Correct captions against the audio#

Automatic transcription is a draft. Check proper names, numbers, negations, product terms, and words the system marked confidently but heard incorrectly. A missing "not" or wrong decimal can reverse the point.

Break captions at phrase boundaries and review their timing after every trim. Keep them clear of faces, demonstrations, and player controls. W3C's caption guidance describes captions as synchronized speech and meaningful audio information; readability and timing are part of the edit, not a cosmetic preset.

In Vidrial, caption correction is Available while animated caption presets are Beta. Get the words and timing right before deciding how they move.

Check the current Shorts rules at upload time#

The 60-second built-in selection and the platform's upload ceiling are not the same rule.

As checked on 2026-07-31, YouTube's computer upload guidance says a Short can be up to three minutes and must be square or vertical. The three-minute Shorts page explains the current classification and says a Short over one minute with an active Content ID claim will be blocked globally.

Use those values as current technical boundaries, not targets. Keep a 38-second idea at 38 seconds if it is complete. Do not split a coherent 80-second demonstration just to imitate the built-in tool's selection length.

Export from the source frame rate where practical. YouTube's recommended encoding settings provide current container, codec, frame-rate, aspect-ratio, and audio guidance. Watch the rendered file rather than approving only the editor timeline.

Upload, connect the original, and verify the result#

Before publishing, confirm the title, audience setting, visibility, altered-content disclosure when applicable, and any rights checks presented by YouTube. Then watch the processed upload on a phone-sized screen. Processing can reveal a soft image, cropped text, or caption collision that was less obvious in the editor.

If you used YouTube's built-in route, the Short already links back to its source. If you uploaded an external export and your channel has advanced feature access, you can add a Related Video in YouTube Studio. The selected video must be public or unlisted and follow YouTube's Community Guidelines.

Do not substitute an ordinary URL in the Short's description and assume it is clickable. YouTube's current link guidance says URLs in Shorts descriptions and comments are non-clickable. Use the supported Related Video route when the full video is the appropriate next step.

Troubleshoot the failure, not the symptom#

If the first source contains many possible moments, estimate how many publishable Shorts it can actually support before styling every candidate. To distribute those clips without repeating the same point all week, use the one-video content repurposing plan.

Vidrial's YouTube Clipper is designed for authorised sources, reviewable moment suggestions, caption correction, clip-specific boundaries, and exports. Start with one specific audience question, inspect context around every candidate, and export only after the frame, words, rights, and final playback pass review. The shortcut is finding the moment faster. The editorial responsibility does not move to the tool.

Questions creators ask

Can I turn any YouTube video into a Short?

No. YouTube's Edit into a Short flow is for your own eligible public long-form uploads. For an external editor, use an original or otherwise authorised source. A public watch page is not permission to download, edit, or republish someone else's video.

Why is Edit into a Short missing from my video?

The built-in option requires your own public long-form upload, Shorts sampling enabled, and no third-party copyright claim. Private and unlisted videos do not qualify for this path. YouTube may also change interface placement, so verify its current mobile help page.

Can a Short made from a YouTube video be longer than 60 seconds?

A separately exported eligible square or vertical upload can currently be up to three minutes. YouTube's built-in Edit into a Short workflow from an existing long-form upload still selects up to 60 seconds.
